Recent results of our research about ultrafast spin-polarized lasers have been selected for publication in Nature. In collaboration with our colleagues from Ulm University and the University at Buffalo we were able to demonstrate that that the coupling between carrier spin and light polarization in semiconductor lasers can enable direct modulation frequencies above 200 GHz, exceeding by nearly an order of magnitude the best conventional devices. As exceptionally high modulation bandwidths can be achieved with low power consumption, our concept shows a promising path for the next generation of energy efficient ultra-fast optical communication.
